Caring for wooden spoons and everyday ceramics

Sample journal entry — created for this website preview.

There is a quiet warmth in picking up a wooden soup spoon or cradling a stoneware bowl that has seen hundreds of family meals. With a few mindful habits, handcrafted utensils and ceramics age gracefully and bring daily comfort.

Washing without haste

Wooden spoons and delicate glazed bowls prefer gentle care over the harsh heat of a dishwasher. Wash them by hand using warm water and mild soap shortly after eating.

Restoring dry wood

  1. Clean and completely air-dry your wooden spoons and chopsticks.
  2. Warm a small dab of food-safe mineral oil or beeswax paste with your fingertips.
  3. Gently rub the oil along the wood grain and let it absorb overnight.
  4. Wipe away any excess with a clean cloth before returning to your kitchen crock.

Doing this once every few months keeps natural wood from splitting and restores its deep, lustrous patina.

The tools we touch every day deserve the same care we pour into our cooking.

Stacking with intention

When stacking handmade ceramic bowls, place a small linen napkin or felt disc between them to protect delicate foot rings and rims from chipping.
