Before you cook: a closer look at your broth label

Sample journal entry — created for this website preview.

Broth mixes can look similar while having different preparation directions. Before making dinner, take a moment to read the label on the specific product you are using. This sample checklist helps organize that first step; it does not replace the instructions on your package.

Check the preparation directions

Look for the amount of water required and the number of portions the package makes. Set out a measuring jug before you begin. Guessing at the first step can make it harder to get the balance you want.

Read the ingredient information

If you are cooking for other people, give them an opportunity to review the ingredient and allergen information themselves. Keep the packaging rather than relying on memory or the product name alone.

Plan your additions

Make a short list of noodles, vegetables and garnishes you want to serve. Prepare each according to its own directions and the recipe you have chosen.

Keep useful notes

After the meal, jot down the combinations you enjoyed. A small note about your preferred garnish or noodle style can make the next dinner simpler to plan.
