Small discoveries: keeping a flavor notebook

Sample journal entry — created for this website preview.

A flavor notebook does not have to be a collection of formal recipes. It can be a few lines on your phone or a page kept in a kitchen drawer. This demo journal idea is about noticing what you enjoy and making it easier to return to it.

Write down the starting point

Note the broth, noodles and main additions you used. Keep the entry short enough that you will actually want to write it after dinner. A product name and a few ingredients may be all you need.

Describe the finishing touch

Was it the extra handful of herbs, the citrus at the end or the choice to keep the bowl simple? Describe the detail that made the meal work for you.

Leave a question for next time

Instead of changing everything at once, choose one idea to try on another evening. A different noodle shape or garnish can give a familiar bowl a fresh character.

Share the discoveries

If someone at the table enjoys a particular combination, ask them to add a line. Over time, the notebook becomes a record of meals and the people who helped make them memorable.
